St. Anthony's smokes
Times just keep getting faster at St. Anthony's Triathlon - at least if you're a professional starting in
one of the front waves of the field which topped 4,000 on Sunday.
After exiting the .93-mile swim in third place
in 17:29, Boulder's Matt Reed, 32, caught and passed his competition as he smoked the 24.8-mile bike course in 53:54.
His 27.7 mph average is even more remarkable when you realize the St. Petersburg course has more than two dozen turns on its
roads. Reed hopped from his bike and then averaged 5:20 miles to run the 10K in 33:06 for a total winning time of 1:46:10.
Leading Brevard's contingent was Satellite Beach's Scott Diehl was went 2:14:36 and placed 36th in the amateur
elite category. Tricia Rydson took the fastest local women's time. Her 2:30:19 was good enough to take ninth out
of the 157 women in the 30-34 age group and an 18-minute O-distance PR. She also received a hand-painted Bill Castleman watercolor
as St. A's awards go ten deep in each category.
Other locals who finished yesterday's race include Greg
Akin, 2:55:35; Sean Black, 2:21:51; Mart Cook, 2:56:17; Tom Downey, 2:42:16; William Edwards, 4:19:15; Linda Jones, 2:41:44;
Anna Ott, 4th 15-19 AG, 2:49:28; Wes Ott, 2:22:50; Linda Smith, 2:57:40; Nick Smith, 2:40:04;Sue Stidham, 3:10:16; Jennifer
Stiner, 3:04:35; Andre Swierzbin, 3rd Clydesdale 50+ (200+ lbs), 2:42:06; Karla Torpy, 3:21:39; Christina Vinson, 3:51:02;
Teresa Williams, 3:06:08; Christy Zieres, 1st Athena, 40-49 (150+ lbs), 2:46:13.
Congrats to all!

That's gotta be a record!
More than 1,300 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at today's Melbourne Arts Fest 5K. Christian Minor, home on
a break from Florida State, grabbed the lead early, posting a 4:54 first mile. The pre-law sophomore, who won
the race in both 2005 and 2006, took it for a third year in 15:45.
Florida Tech's Jared Doescher,22,
was more than a minute behind, taking second in 16:47. Melbourne's Chris Rego was third in 16:56.
On the ladies
side, Tech's Carolyn Salois, 21, led the women in 19:51. The real race was for second and third with Tracy
Smith edging out Jackie Clifton as both were clocked at 20:19.

Mind Boggling

Mind Boggling yet really exciting! As of yesterday, more than 1,300 had signed up for tomorrow's Melbourne
Arts Fest 5K. Wow! It is pretty cool to see that many people willing to comit to fitness. Health is something
we take for granted until it becomes elusive and running can help keep health close by.
Another large crowd will toe the starting line Sunday at St. Anthony's triathlon in St. Petersburg. This is
the 22nd year for the international-distance (.93 s; 24.8 b; 10k r) event and more than 4,000, yup FOUR THOUSAND from 46 states
and seven countries have registered.
Locals joining the St. A's fray include Greg Akin, 39, Titusville; Sean
Black, 39, Melbourne; Liz Cerow, 55, Cocoa Beach; Mart Cook, 43, Titusville; Scott Diehl, 24, Satellite Beach; Wolfgang Jensen,
56, Indialantic; Linda Jones, 41, Titusville; Wes Ott, 52, Cocoa Beach; Tricia Rydson, 34, Melbourne Beach; Chris Sorensen,
35, Melbourne; Sue Stidham, 45, Palm Bay; Jennifer Stiner, TItusville; Andre Swierzbin, 52, Melbourne; Karla Torpy, 49, Melbourne;

My money is on Wayne!
Below is a note I received from Wayne Wright. For those of you who don't have the joy of knowing he and his lovely,
bride, Fiona, Wayne had quadruple bypass surgery last month. Huge surprise to all as he is a guy who eats well, laughs often
and had run 30+ marathons, most since 2004.
Anyway, you can't keep a good guy down. Here's the proof:
"Last Monday, I walked 13.1 miles in 3:17. Friday, with my surgeon's consent,
I used a six-minute cycle (walk 5, run 1) for six miles. Yesterday, I used a five-minute cycle (walk 3:40, run
1:20) for the Space Walk 8K (51:37). The 1:20 run was all I wanted; it kicked my butt. I'm hoping to
build up to a 3 or 4 minute run per cycle for the Flying Pig Marathon. I may be too optimistic, but I see a six-hour
finish possible. I think that would be respectable for 45 days after surgery. Place your bets."
If I were someone who bets, my money would be on Wayne!

Wind gods turn triathlon into duathlon
 The first race of yesterday's Family Fitness Tri series should have started with a half-mile ocean swim. Instead
the race turned into a duathlon. Below is Rob Downey's description of the event:
Patti,
the wind Gods were not kind to EMS for the opening series sprint race with very strong easterly breeze shutting down
the possibility for an ocean swim. Thus, a duathlon for all, 2mile beach run north-south, 13.4 mile bike on A1A,
finishing with a 5k back north-south. With the easterly crosswind, our bike speeds were quite normal despite the wind. I
had a good time; it was legs all the way. Rob
Rob took first in the 55-59 AG with his 1:14:06.
Top Brevard finisher was Ed Donner who took second in the 30-34 AG in 1:10:33. Others locals who raced included Dorothy
Adams, 3rd 45-49 AG, 1:34:44; Max Bosso, 1:20:58; Garry Branch, 1:34:52; Edith Farnham, 3rd Athena, 1:41:46; Karen Gathercole,
2:06:47; John Lothrop, 2nd 45-49 AG, 1:10:37; Doug Hannah, 3rd Clydesdale, 1:20:29; Teresa Williams, 1:35:12.
Congrats
to all!

How can you beat free AND fun?
How 'bout a nice race or recovery run tomorrow? The 3-miler is on beautifully groomed hard-packed trails in
some of the county's prettiest area. Race Director Rob Downey and the city of Melbourne Village offer it for free.
Yup, no strings-only a good time!
Gotta appreciate the work Rob has done to pull this together again - especially
when you consider how he has spent the last few weeks.
Last Sat. he race the Escape from Ft. DeSoto Triathlon,
taking third in the 55-59 age group. Instead of sleeping in the next day, he chose to peddle 100 miles through wind
and rain in this year's Ride for the Red.
This morning, he raced the first of the Family Fitness series triathlons
up in St. Augustine and tomorrow he'll be up bright and early to provide a great race.

Shouldn't that be Space RUN of Fame 8K?
Caps off to Marty Winkel and his crew for pulling off a successful finish to both the ROY and TRS racing season today. The
weather gods stuffed a plug in the rain hole prior to the 8 a.m. start and runners were greeted with cool,
windy and overcast conditions.
Ron Abel shook off a tough year that included health issues and a new baby to win
today's Space Walk of Fame 8K in 29:22. Going into the race fourth in the Space Coast Runners Runner of the Year series,
Abel's double-point win catapulted him to third.
Sean Black was second in 29:38 followed for third by
Ed Springer in 30:22. Art Anderson grabbed Master's with his 30:24.
And the OA awards didn't stop there.
Bob Christenson took the Grand Master's (50+) spot in 31:21 with Roger Rouiller nailing the Sr. Grand Master's
(60+) in a smokin' 32:38-the guy is amazing.
The break from racing did little to diminish the speedy steps
of Caitlin Reese, who won the women's in 31:41, more than a minute ahead of the rest of the female field. Tracy
Smith, who had already locked up enough points to win the series, took second in 33:08. Kara Niedermier was third in
33:47 and Robin Hernandez ran a PR of 34:18 to take Master's.
Sue Strout took Grand Master's in 36:45 and Mary Ramba captured the Senior Grand Master's in 44:14.

Loran Serwin is working the final series scores-all of which will be posted at www.spacecoastrunners.org
Congrats to all who raced and volunteered today!

Biting back in Beantown
No doubt those who qualify for Boston are some of the best long-distance runners around. They don't let adverse
conditions get in their way and today's local finishes are proof. All who started, finished, and many of those
also requalified for the next year's race when they hit the line on Boylston Street. Rudy Behrend, 43,
of Cocoa Beach brought home the fastest Brevard finish in 3:18:15. Merritt Island's Janet Ritchie, 27, took the local
ladies top spot in 3:24:28.
Congrats to the following local finishers of today's 111th Boston Marathon

Biting in Boston
WeatherUnderground.com is currently reporting temps of 47 in Beantown with a windchill of 38; winds from the NE at 29 mph
with gusts to 41. Oh, yeah, and rain.
Some of the Brevard crew have checked in: Danny Barrett, John Ouweleen
and Gary Stutte managed to get pre-race space in the Hopkinton gym and Rick Foresteire is sitting in one of the Boston
police luxury busses until the start. Dawgs.
I called Denise Piercy. She and Audrey Joiner were still on their
way on one of the non-luxury rides and both had 7-11 bags tied around their feet to help keep them dry until the start. It
is always the women who suffer.
Good luck to all who are racing today. Locals can follow their progress on-line
at www.baa.org Versus television is broadcasting live starting at 9a.m. and will repeat the show at 4 p.m. today.

We're not in Kansas any more - or are we?
Ok, not really. But banners, equipment and athlete's transition gear tried to escape during today's Tri America
kick-off race. At one point the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning and indicated gusts as high as 50 mph in
the area - while most of the athletes were still out on the long (1.25-mile swim; 37-mile bike; 15K run) or short (.62/18.6/4.7)
course. Yikes!
How bad was it?
It was bad enough to force race organizers to take down timing clocks; move the race announcer to a safer spot and strip the
course of all but the bare minimum needed for athlete safety and comfort. Some finishers reported timing mats floating a
bit as more than an inch of rain felt like it was punching holes in people, cars and bikes. Lightning made spectators huddling
in the pavilion jump or yip with every bright flash.
There were several reports of accidents out on the slick,
hilly bike course and we saw a truck drop off more than a few bikes and their athletes who decided to call it a day before
hitting the finish. Not sure if it was the deep water on the roads, the lightening or the wheel-jacking winds that helped
make up their minds.
Those who held the steadiest, behind the athletes, were those trieless volunteers who stayed
glued to their posts in spite of their fear and/or discomfort. Kudos to the CFT Sports folks!
Local triathletes
did Brevard county proud and included (long course) Cameron Cole, 4:42:00; Ed Donner, 3:51:04; Tom Hoffman, 2nd AG, 4:07:44;
Pam Maxwell, 2nd OA, 3:41:08; Donal McKinnon, 4:20:49; John Sherwin, 4:44:19. (short course) Kathy Blair; 1st Athena; 2:43:07;
Edward Blair, 1st Fat Tire; 2:20:46; Kirk Burns, 3rd Clydesdale, 2:13:47; Suzanne Coullias, 5th AG; 3:00:54; John Graves,
2:26:31; Wolfgang Jensen and new hip, 4th AG, 2:07:38;Elly Kabboord, 1st AG, 2:00:26; Brian Lajoie, 4th AG; Sage Lajoie,
1st AG, 2:02:50; Peter Mazzone, 3rd AG; 2:27:09; Brian Murtha, 2:19:14; Cathi Rodgers, 3:04:36; Tricia Rydson, 2nd AG, 2:08:11;
Jennifer Stiner, 4th AG, 2:26:30; Christine Tripodi, 2:26:32; Cameron Wakefield, 2:25:34. Caps off also
to all those who raced yesterday's Escape From Ft. DeSoto sprint race which included a .5-mile swim; 10-mile bike and
4-mile run. Locals who finished included Linda Cowart, 1:18:31; Rob Downey, 3rd 55-59 AG; 1:09:49; Bill Edwards, 1:52:45;
Hazem El Saawef, 1:30:16; Robert Foy, 1:26:54; Kevin Murtha, 2nd 35-39 AG, 1:04:36; Craig Smith, 1:42:20; Thomas Turek,
1:27:51.
