What do Jared Doescher and Kayla Hale have in common?
Wayne Wright trucks DTM 5KBoth won today's 25th annual Downtown Melbourne 5K - Jared taking the men's race in 16:21 and Kayla smokin' the girls, two minutes later, in 18:21.  Finishing much farther back and almost three times longer that usual, was Wayne Wright. What is so astounding about Wright's finish is that he underwent a quadruple bypass operation just last Thursday. WOW!  Congrats to all who participated today to help raise more than $5,000 for the Haven.

A trophy that will come in handy on long car rides
Zach with owner Dave HernandezWith the dog days of summer approaching, the Big Brothers/Big Sisters K9 Cross Country 5K run on Sat. was something to bark about.  Although Dave Kilgore won the race in 18:01; Casey Brown, accompanied by his person, Jonathan Brown, grabbed the Top Dog award in 18:12.

Connie Young took the ladies race in 23:00.

Yellow Lab Zach Hernandez was disappointed. "We could have won this thing if dad (Dave Hernandez) hadn't stopped to tie his shoes and sniff the grass."  Next time, Zach, let mom run with you! :) Results at  http://mahoney4.home.netcom.com/scr/races/07bigbro.txt

Art Anderson and his winning palmCongrats to Art Anderson, who took the win in 18:17.  A big WHOO HOO to Melissa Stacy who not only took the top women's spot, but her 19:16 was good enough for second overall.

Even more whooo hooo to Tracy Smith, who took second in 19:42 and Robin Hernandez, who took third in 21:40.  Both of these ladies set PRs today.  Robin's time took a HUGE drop as her previous 5K PR was 22:00.  Congrats to all who raced this weekend.

A bit o' green for the laddies and lassies
Dick White and new best friendTemperatures of 27 degrees with blustery winds would make even the hardiest of leprechauns want to stay indoors but several of the local clan toughed it out at the Shamrock Marathon on Virginia Beach this weekend.

Those lucky clovers who endured included Cyndi Bergs, 4:33:19; Dick White, 4:12:59; Marlene White, 4:24:48; Beth Trout, 4:14:06.

And some were tougher than others as three of the lassies also finished the Shamrock 8K during the weekend as well. Marlene White went 43:54; her niece, Robin Niles was one second behind and Cyndi Bergs pulled a 45:58.

The results just keep coming....
Dana Artz took second AG in 2:37 at the Wildman Olympic-distance raceTri season kicked off in ernest this weekend with the Buttar Wildman Festival at Moss Park on the east side of Orlando.  Cold temps made the 23 who had signed on for the sprint duathlon (2.75-mile run; 12.4-mile bike; 2.75-mile run) on Sat. grateful not to have to be wrestling with a wetsuit. Local sprint duathlon finishers included Linda Coward, 2nd OA, 1:22:51; Jim Schaeffer, 1st AG, 1:20:48 and Greg Cross, 2nd AG, 1:33:19.

At the same time, 44 others were lining up on the lakeshore for  the My first Triathlon (.25m swim; 12.4m bike; 2.75m run). When the results popped up later in the day, six locals were no longer tri virgins.  Congrats to Fayez Ayoub, 1st AG, 1:17:59; Keith Dalke, 1:29:58; Donna Davis, 1st OA, 1:18:29; Angela Montez, 1st AG, 1:43:20; Juan Posada, 1st AG, 1:22:32; Loran Serwin, 5th OA, 1:17:07.

The 82 athletes participating in the sprint triathlon swam a bit farther (.5 mile) but still biked and ran the same as the newbies. Local finishers included Sean Black, 3rd AG, 1:05:53; John Blackstone, 1:22:41; Laurie Disanto, 2nd AG, 2:13:18; Susie Enlow, 1st AG, 1:13:08; Nathan Falk, 1:14:09; Kyle Griffith, 1:11:03; Randy Hierbaum, 1st AG, 1:12:07; Lori Kruger, 1st AG, 1:20:03; Michael Mandese, 1:29:07; Mario Mandese, 1:30:46; Debbie Rescott, 1st AG, 1:30:51; Marc Van Heden, 1:18:16; Christy Zieres, 1st Athena (150+ lbs), 1:17:03.

On Sunday, the distances went (almost) international and the tri gods requested participants to swim .93 mile; cycle 24.8 miles and run 5.5-miles which is .7 short of the standard international or Olympic distance.  Those representing the Space Coast came through with flying colors and included Dana Artz, 2nd AG, 2:36:01; Jeff Cook, 2:51;38; Stuart Dawley, 3:17:24; Ed Donner, 2nd AG, 2:35:01.

Good times had by all

It was a good day to be a runner in Brevard County.  Cool, breezy conditions helped close to 500 runners cross the finish line at one of two 5K races and many set PRs.  Here are some race highlights:

Calvary Chapel 5K in Melbourne:
Age group award winners l to r: Dave Hernandez, Frank Webbe, Robin Hernandez, Matt Mahoney, Wayne Wright* After a  lengthy running hiatus due to posas, groin and adductor injuries, Autumn Evans came back stronger than ever today, running a 5K PR of 21:27 and taking the women's win.  It was a confidence builder for the Melbourne Beach software engineer as she continues to ramp her mileage and speed for Boston next month.
* Jared Doesher, who took second at last weekend's Eye of the Dragon, took a step up with his 16:35 overall win today. The FL Tech senior was using the race to test his speed for next week's 1500 and 5K track events at Embry Riddle next weekend.
* Tons of injuries and surgeries this past year did little to stop Robin Hernandez from running a 5K PR of 22:00 and taking home the ladies master's trophy!
* Race director Paul Fleming reported that enough cash was raised "to
be able to sponsor 10 Dalit ("untouchable" class in India) children for a whole year to go to school to learn to read and write; get uniforms; meals; and medical checkups.  It's an awesome program."

Run for your Life 5K in Titusville:
* After watching Kara Niedermeir's times drop over the last year or so from all the hard work she has been doing, it was awesome to see her name in the top spot!  The Divine Mercy Catholic school athletic director took the win in 20:11, shaving 31 seconds off of her previous 5K P.R.
* Niedermeir attributed much of her win to the encouragement of her coach, Rebecca Sparks, who ran with her through two miles and then took second in 20:29.  It is nice to see Rebecca out racing again after giving birth last year to daughter, Kira.
* Steve Raymond and Frank Kapr repeated the one-two waltz they danced in January on the Light the Way course. Raymond once again beat his elder to the finish taking 16:59 to Kapr's 17:14.  Not bad for a kid who had run the mile and two-miler at the Astronaut track meet the evening before.
* Race director Sarah Guttery presented the American Red Cross with a check for $500 from the race proceeds to help central FL tornado victims.

The river ran hot
We shouldn't throw stones but...why can't the weather guys get it right?  As more than eighty locals trekked to Jacksonville Friday for the 30th annual Gate River Run 15K, both the Weather Channel and weatherunderground.com were both calling for a 40-60% chance of rain and lows in the 50s for the Sat. a.m. race start.  Even the local Jax stations were talking the same story but also upped the rain chance.

Woops! Not a cloud was in sight on race day and temperatures were in the mid 60s and starting to climb an hour before the 8: 30 a.m. start. Clothes started peeling off fast and by the time the gun went off five minutes early to start the elite women, the crowd of 14,000 was down to bare essentials. Trees along the start, which formerly had sported small spring green leaves, quicky became covered with shirts and jackets in every color.

Less than 45 minutes later, Deena Drossin Kaster came ripping through the finish in 42:20.  Her time of 47:20 was adjusted downward by five minutes as part of the 'equalizer' race. Elite women were given a five-minute head start on the men and the first one to hit the line, male or female, received a $5K bonus on top of the $12K winner's purse.  This was the fifth win on this course for Kastor, who also took bronze in the 2004 Olympic marathon.

Men's winner, Meb Keflezighi, finished 'second' to Kastor in 43:40. Keflezighi is a five-time course winner and took silver in the 2004 Olympic marathon.

From Brevard, Melbourne's Sean Black turned the fastest time. His 56:21 was the only one to break an hour among the scores of locals who finished.  Lori Jenkins, also from Melbourne, took the local women's top spot in 1:11:35.

In an unique type triumph, Gary Castner, 61, celebrated his 30th finish at the Gate River Run.  He is one of only 48 to have run each of the Jacksonville 15K events and race organizers honored them with special shorts and shirts with the word 'streaker' emblazoned upon their backs.

Congrats to all from our area who finished the River Run 15K including Donna Andress, 1:44:52; Kim Badgett, 1:16:58; Danny Barrett, 1:04:39; Marilyn Bertot, 1:30:54; Jerry Bird, 1:04:00; Barry Birdwell, 1:51:27; Michele Birdwell, 1:40:00; Sean Black, 56:21; Brynn Brito, 1:35:49; Stephen Brito, 1:42:28; Bobby Cameron, 1:39:51; Gary Castner 1:29:16; Floyd Capistrano, 1:53:19; Carol Connolly, 1:32:37; Lenny Corack, 1:37:52; Kristin Cusimano, 1:29:59; Kristin Dankjer, 1:08:44; Nicole Dawkins, 1:36:27; Robert Feldman, 1:52:32; Tammy Flowers, 2:08:45; Donna Garson, 1:42:38; Kathy Gay, 1:45:26; Mary Godfrey, 2:40:46; April Goodwin, 1:33:19; Kyle Goodwin, 1:13:31; Kim Graham, 1:13:15; John Hardos, 1:22:34; Melissa Harper, 1:32:25; Dede Henrich, 1:25:38; Heidi Horton, 1:24:12; Karen Hughes, 1:30:59; Joy Hunkins, 1:41:47; Nancy Huy-Perry, 1:26:46; Lori Jenkins, 1:11:35; James Johnson, 1:12:35; Katie Johnson, 1:33:25; Rick Kendus, 1:04:54; Gran Krauss, 1:20:59; Ed Latham, 1:39:28; Kathy Lemire, 2:10:26; Lou Lemire, 2:10:26; Christine Lighthill, 1:36:52; Tegan Litt, 1:28:19; Yvonne Martinez, 1:58:37; Marshall Minami, 1:19:02; Kathy Mos, 1:54:17; Mike Mos, 1:24:36; Linda Moynihan, 1:45:53; Anne Nichols, 1:26:17; Kathy Ojeda, 1:25:33; Jean Oliver, 1:30:00; Kevin Oliver, 1:24:59; Connie Paxson, 1:39:07;  Robert Paxson, 1:36:38; Charles Patisaul, 1:47:38; Mendi Raymond, 1:22:25; Rory Rowan, 1:03:53; Eddie Repper, 1:32:13; Ned Repper, 2:31:49; Maila Sepri, 1:25:34; Veronica Sim, 1:20:31; Candy Smith, 1:26:14; Debbie Sokol, 1:37:51; Drew Spray, 1:13:22; Patti Sponsler, 1:23:31; Arthur Stoeke, 1:33:54; Gary Stutte, 1:07:22; Evelyn Taylor, 1:31:02; David Taurasi, 1:15:59; Patricia Taurasi, 1:30:37; Erik Tjader, 1:36:44; Marty Winkel, 1:13:16; Dawn Wolfe, 1:13:30; Mike Wright, 1:41:09.

O'Cheetah sails to win at Calema Midwinters

Kathy 'speedy cheetah' Ojeda is fast and agile on land and her times in the 45-49 age group prove it.  Her open women's win in the Sport Hybrid division at the 22nd annual Calema Midwinters windsurfing festival this weekend proves she possesses those same qualities on the water just as well.

Midwinters draws some of the best in the world, including pros and Olympians, to Merritt Island every year. Complete info about the event can be found at www.calema.com  Congrats, Kathy!!!

Don't let that wet dragon into this house, young man
Heavy winds and a drizzle of rain greeted 300 runners yesterday at the Eye of the Dragon 10K in Melbourne.  The top two winning names on the men's list read just like last year.  Once again, St. Augustine's Todd Neville managed to best Melbourne's Jared Doescher.  Neville, who was going for the win and not time, sat in behind Doescher until mile five on the east side of the pinnacle of the Eau Gallie causeway. Pulling away, Neville put 19 seconds on Doescher, taking the win in 35:09. Doescher, a senior at FL Tech, was second in 35:28, followed for third by Sean Black, also of Melbourne, in 37:51.

On the ladies side, Palm City's Michelle Weiler, who was unaware that she would have a bridge to cross twice, missed her goal of breaking 40:00 by 27 seconds as she hit the line in 40:27.  Melbourne's Jessica Stern, last week's Tooth Trot winner, was second in 41:02 followed for third by Palm Bay's Tracy Smith in 43:17.

Complete results are still unavailable at this time but race photos can be oogled at
www.trihoke.com .  Congrats to all who raced and volunteered yesterday.
