A bloomin' good tucker
awaited those who finished the Outback Distance Classic 12K in Orlando. The famous chain steakhouse served
up plenty of food and beer to those who finished the 7.3 mile run Saturday afternoon. Leading the locals was Titusville's
Gary Stutte who ran 52:42, taking second in the men's 50-54 age group and pulling three minutes off of his previous 12K
PR. Others who hit the Lake Eola Park finish line included Dorothy Adams, 1:08:15; Michael Brookhart, 1:22:05; Viviana Bueiz-Carino,,
1:08:04; Cameron Cole, 1:12:41; Danielle Collyer, 1:07:07; Greg Cross, 1:10:52; Nancy Cross, 1:14:03; Diane Durand, 1:41:19;

It could always be worse.....
Normally, we write about others on this
site but today I had one of those slap-you-in-your-face and kick-you-in-the-ass lessons. A few weeks ago I pulled the
muscles in my inner thigh. Most people call it a 'groin pull'. Did it on my bike by peddling funky.
I think I got my fitting taken care of and then cut way back. Things seemed ok again until Wed. Our swim coach,
Mo Hughes, made us swim better than I thought was possible in this almost 49-year-old body. On the ride afterward my
butt was dragging-big time. It was hard to turn the peddlles and I wrote it off to some amazingly fast (for me) times
in the water.
Ok, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I just didn't *get* that my front brake
was dragging. I guess the increased pressure on the peddle stroke jerked those muscles around again. During yesterday's
run the pain stopped me in my tracks coming off the Eau Gallie Cswy.
Went to swim this a.m. Even a gentle kick
hurt like hell and a kindly doc in the lane next to me put the fear of God into me about continuing to work out with that
type of injury. Poop.
All day I've felt sorry for myself writing off Gate 15K, a practice O-distance
race at Ft. DeSoto and also St. Anthonys at the end of April. A trip to the grocery store had me fantasizing about pigging
out on Oreos and Ben and Jerrys.
As I pitifully cruised through slowtwitch.com tonight trying to find out how
to 'get over' this crap, the answer came in another form.
Check out the photo at the right. Yup,
that is a pair or prosthetic legs awaiting for someone who is out on the swim course during the San Diego TriChallenge.
My groin is no longer a bfd. It will heal and I'll still have my legs. In the meantime I guess yardwork gets
done; the house will be cleaner and I can return some dinners I owe people.
Enjoy the weekend with what you have..........

Barrett, Stutte & Ouweleen set (more) PRs
The
boyz continue their mission as they head toward Boston in April. Yesterday, Danny Barrett took the 40-44 age group at
the Five Points of Life half marathon in Gainesville. His 1:30:20 win gave him a half-mary PR by three minutes. A 1:36:06
at the same race gave Garry Stutte a PR by three seconds and fourth in the 50-54 age group. Farther west, John 'Johnny
O' Ouweleen, won the 65-69 age group by more than eight minutes with his 1:41:39 finish at the Gasparilla half marathon.
Other locals finishing the same Tampa half included Lisa Cole, 1:56:59; Natasa Coso, 2:01:01; David Kendrick,
2:04:19; Margaret Kendrick, 2:03:57; Molly Kirk, 2:02:29; Cathie Poor, 1:49:26 (PR); Susan Reed, 2:13:23; Rachel Ryder, 1:59:29;
Drew Spray, 1:46:50 and Christine West, 1:51:30.
The Gasparilla weekend also included a marathon in which Todd
Angel grabbed a 3:23:56 and Matthew Ringelspaugh went 3:28:56. Nick Smith once again qualified for Boston with his 3:28:09!!
Much farther north, Wayne and Fiona Wright completed their zillionth marathons when they crossed the line of the Myrtle
Beach race. Wayne is getting closer to Boston with his 3:49:44 and Fiona's foot is healing as she finished in 4:28:31
sans crutches!

There is (much) more to life than NASCAR! :)
Cold temps kept day-of-race registrations
low throughout the state this weekend but there was no shortage of races to choose from. Closest to home, Fun 'n
the Sun 5K runners faced wind chills in the thirties at yesterday's 7:30 a.m. start. 17 minutes 13 seconds later,
Palm Bay's Eric Walter scored his second OA win since moving here from Manchester, MI late last year. The substitute teacher
had to share the top spot with his wife, Christina, as she grabbed the ladies in 21:44. Complete results for this race are
available at http://www.runningzone.com/results.html?id=0281Race results for yesterday's two other races, the Terrier Trot in Titusville
and the FL Tech in Melbourne, are not yet available and phone numbers listed for the race directors were office numbers.
Heading an hour west yesterday, several locals left early to make it to the start of Track Shack's Run Around
the Pines 5K and three brought home hardware. Melbourne's Sean Black took third in the 35-39 in 17:39. Cocoa Beach's
Kevin Butler must have been hot on Sean's heels as Butler scored first in the 40-44 two seconds later in 17:41.
Jennifer Meacham, Cape Canaveral, grabbed first in the 25-29 with her 19:46. Others who completed the race included John Bailey,
37:01; Sandra Bailey, 33:53 and Shelby McFall, 33:30.
Even farther west, a dozen locals crossed the line of the
30th annual Gasparilla Distance Classic 15K in Tampa yesterday. The race is part of a weekend event that also included
a 5K yesterday and a half and full marathon today. While no results are up yet for the longer races, local 15K finishers
include Edward Bain, 1:37:20; Marilyn Bertot, 1:27:02; William Edwards, 1:38:01; Erica Gregory, 1:23:06; Tommy Gregory, 1:23:07;
Patricia Marcher, 1:50:43; Richard Mooty, 1:39:19; Robert Mooty, 1:39:16; Trevor Orsinger, 1:18:21; John Parker, 1:50:43;
Brian Stile, 1:21:32; Dawn Wolfe, 1:14:21.
While it was a few degrees warmer in Ft. Lauderdale this morning, those
racing the A1A Marathon and Half had ferocious winds to contend with. Those who powered through the 26.2-mile course
included Bruce Barton, 3:49:00; Anne O'Connor-Smith, 3:58:40 and Mary Wills, 4:31:57. Those who cut it 'short'
at 13.1 were Kate Chapman, 2:09:37; Linda McKee, 1:56:26; David Mecoll, 1:48:19; Debbie Molina, 2:02:15 and Danielle Stern,
2:06:25.
Congrats to all who raced!

Take your pick!
Unless your favorite distance is the 10K, this weekend has a race for you! The Fun 'n the
Sun 5K kicks off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Suntree United Methodist church on Wickham Road. If ya hit the
snooze you can still make the 8 a.m. start of either the FL Tech 5K at FL Tech or the Terrier Trot 5K in Titusville.
Complete information and applications for these three races are available at http://www.runningzone.com/calendar/
Feel like driving? Tampa Bay's offers the 30th Gasparilla weekend which includes
a 5K and 15K on Sat. and a full and half marathon on Sunday. http://www.tampabayrun.com/site3.aspx The weekend also offers special awards for those who do the 5K, 15K and either the full
or half over the two days? Who needs Goofy?
Finally, Ft. Lauderdale is the place to be if you've registered
for or want to cheer participants of the A1A marathon and half. http://www.a1amarathon.com/

and discussion.

Makin' Hash at the Tiger Dash
Kayla Hale is bright, funny and FAST! For the past
three years the now 15-year-old Holy Trinity sophomore has taken the women's win at the Tiger Dash 5K and Saturday
was no exception. Her 17:19 win not only took the top spot but the time (1) beat the course record which
she set last year in 18:08; (2) gave her fifth overall (3) was a road personal best and (4)beat her coach, Doug
Butler, by one second!
Other race highlights: *Lyndsey Spragins beat out Kelly Farris for second
by only .3 of a second. Spragins went 20:44.4 while Farris was clocked at 20:44.7.
*Two boyz from Embry Riddle
took first and second, leaving third for Tyler Truitt, who ran a 17:04.
*Women's 10K winner, Tracy Smith, set
a 10K PR with her 41:46 finish. Her goal had been to break 43 - wow, some break!
*There was something about
the number '35' for the men's top three spots. Kyle Butler won in 35:01. Steve Hedgespeth pulled second
with a 35:20 and a 35:56 was good enough for Keith Potter to take third.
*Patrick McCormick ran a huge 10K PR of
38:32 to take Master's. Patrick has only been running for four years.
*Ryan Garrett, 8, expresses his
joy at the finish line as he finishes his first 5K (check out photo on right).
*Things are getting even tighter
in the male 50-55. Second through sixth place in the 10K were all within 13 seconds of one another. Jerry Bird, second,
ran 41:27. Don Dore, Jr. went sixth with a 41:40.
*With now only three races left in the Space Coast Runners
Runner of the Year Series, Steve Hedgespeth and Tracy Smith hold commandable leads. With the Space Walk of
Fame 8K offering double points and the three drop rule in effect, things can change. Stay tuned....

Tiger gets swung by tail
Maybe lack of sleep and the newfound
joy of fatherhood put a little extra spring in the already speedy steps of Steve Hedgespeth. Although Kara Anne was
just born twelve days ago, Steve managed to take the win at today's Tiger by the Tail 5K in 16:56. His top spot at the
Space Coast Runner Runner of the Year race keeps Steve firmly entrenched in the #1 spot in the series.
Running
in not too far behind was Jonathan Brasch, who took second in 17:08. Benjamin Bowman was third in 17:28.
Caitlyn
Reese popped up again and, as usually happens when she makes an appearance, she won - by more than a minute - in 19:10. Tracy
Smith followed for second in 20:15 and Kara niedermeier took third in 20:48.
Congrats to all who volunteered and
raced today!

How can cheaters look in the mirror?
Coach Bernie Sher reacts to an act of cheating relayed to him from one
of the athletes he coaches. In short, the athlete witnessed the lead female of a longer race cutting the course short by one-and-a-half
to two miles. When he asked her about it, she admitted to cutting the course short but had justified it because she had gotten
off course at an earlier point.
What would you have done in either case?
