She's baaaa-aaak
Oh,
yeah! It is great to see Debra Johansen, 45, zipping along at the local races again. She pretty much ruled her age group
several years ago and today's Run for the Light 5K was no exception. Debra took the overall female win in 20:55.
Welcome back!
On the men's side, out-of-towner John Colucci, 47, was able to take the overall bobblehead award
back to Pittsfield, MA. Hope the award isn't considered a weapon at the airports.
Congrats to race director
Barbara Linton and all who participated today to help raise money for the Candlelighters of Brevard. This great organization
helps kids and their families fight cancer.

First draft a hit!
Congrats
to race director Sarah Guttery and her team for doing such an outstanding job at yesterday's inaugural GEF Light the Way
5K in Titusville! Maybe they had some help from above as all proceeds went to the Gilchrist Educational Foundation,
a non-profit multi-denominational organization that provides scholarships to families for Christian education
and grants to Christian schools for capital improvement.
The race, which was
#3 in the Titusville Race Series, drew more than 250 entries, which is rare for an unknown, first-time event-especially
in Titusville.
The weather was perfect for the one-loop 3.1-mile event and Titusville high school senior
Steven Raymond, 17, took the win in 17:27. Jessica Stern, also 17, from Melbourne, set a PR with her ladies' win
of 18:45.
Congrats to all who raced today!

A table for 2,676?
That’s how many athletes crossed the finish line at the Seasons
52 Park Avenue 5K in Winter Park this morning. Perfect weather made up for the rocky cobblestones and a couple of little hills
(Clermont athletes insert snicker here). Ryan Woods, 27, from Daytona Beach took the win
in 15:20 while Orlando’s Heather Schulz, 32, led the women in 19:06.
Several from Brevard also brought home hardware. Melbourne’s Sean Black,
38, finished ninth overall and third in his age group with his finish time of 17:31. Not too far behind
and in ninth overall was Kevin Butler, 44, of Cocoa Beach. Butler’s 17:40 also gave
him an age group third.
First place age group and seventh overall
female went to Jennifer Meacham. The 28-year-old Cape Canaveral accountant zipped in right at 20:00.
62-year-old Michael Zeitfuss from Satellite Beach posted the fourth fastest local time and grabbed
2nd in his age group as he hit the line in 22:07.
Congrats to all who raced today.

What a Blast in Winter!
Although
it felt more like spring than winter today, more than 150 showed up for the 8th annual Winter Blast 5K at Rockledge High School.
Proving, indeed, that talent can be inherited, sisters Melissa and Stephanie Jones took the top two spots on the ladies
side. Melissa, 15, a freshman at Holy Trinity, won the event in 20:05. Stephanie, 17, was second in 22:08,
followed for third by Chelsea Martin. The Jones gals are the daughters of Brenda and Barry Jones, talented runners,
triathletes and parents.
Lauren Wilkin grabbed the Master (40+) top spot in 23:51.
On the guys'
side, 16-year-old John Culver bested the field by almost a minute, taking the win in 16:36. Jonathon Brash was second
in 17:32 and John Davis grabbed third in 17:58.
Art Anderson, scored the Master's (40+) in 18:36.
Congrats to all who raced on this beautiful day!

The mouse continues to bake
Disney's
magic fell short again today as warm weather and dense fog greeted those racing the full marathon this morning. Overall
men's winner, Adriano Bastos, proved how training in San Paulo, Brazil, can help one stay acclimated as he took his
third straight win on the course, finishing in 2:19:44, more than eleven minutes ahead of his competitors. On the ladies
side, Paige Higgins, 23, of Littleton, CO, hit the tape first in 2:51:38. Look for more from this young lady as today
was her first shot at the marathon distance.
From Brevard, Lt. Col. Mike Wasson, 41, of West Melbourne mopped
the floor with his 2:55:37. It was good enough for 3rd in the 40-44 age group and 31st overall. Melbourne's
Patrick McCormick, 46, of Melbourne, pulled off a 3:21:31 to take his first Boston Qualifier by nine minutes! Titusville's
Sarah Guttery led the women with her 3:43:54. The 41-year-old Titusville veterinarian, whose most recent marathon PR
includes a 3:14 and 3rd OA win at the Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans, said she was good until mile 24. Stopping
to walk through the water stop was her undoing as severe foot and leg cramps set in, forcing a death march of 16:50 per mile
for the last 2.2 miles.

The mouse finally gets burned.
After thirteen years of skating by with cool and sometimes downright cold weather, the heat and humidity that
has often tortured the participants of other Florida winter marathons finally socked it to the 16,000 registered for
today's Walt Disney World half marathon. According to weatherunderground.com, 71 degrees and 87 percent humidity
greeted those at the 6 a.m. start.
More than 300 Brevard residents had registered with somewhat less actually making
it to the start or finish lines. Keith Potter, 19, was the top local male finisher. The Palm Bay student finished
in 1:20:52, taking fourteenth overall and second in his age group. Melbourne's Lori Jenkins, 46, turned the fastest
women's time with her 1:45:47. The talented artist placed eighth out of 829 in the 45-49 age group. Sean Black,
38, and also of Melbourne, grabbed an age group third with his great 1:24:13 finish.

And so, the new year begins......
Members
of Space Coast Runners ushered in the first day of 2007 with a short run, enormous amounts of eating, a mimosa or two and,
for some, a quick dip in the Atlantic. We share some photos on the right.
Gotta say, it was great to see
both Carol Ball, Fiona Wright and Robin Hernandez running today. Carol has suffered knee problems from a miniscus
surgery gone awry, Finona is recovering from a 'bloody' stress fracture and Robin continues to battle a leg left
funky by surgery done to repair a ruptured appendix and sepsis. An especially healthy, happy new year to you three!
Coming up this weekend is the Disney Marathon weekend. Almost 600 runners from Brevard will line up for
either the half marathon on Saturday or the full mary on Sunday. Some hearty souls will also attempt to earn the coveted
(?) Goofy medal, which shows they ran both races. Back-to-back. Those who seek to be Goofy include: Cape
Canaveral's Andrea and Shawn Schaffner; Cocoa's Joe Bulington; Cocoa Beach's Judy Bailey & John Rice; Malabar's
Loma Evans, Christy Smith and Renee White; Melbourne's Eric Bailey, Cedric Ching, George Haddad, Justin Shein, Michael
Shupe, Michaela Shupe and Scott Wilmont; Melbourne Beach's Barry and Michelle Birdwell; Merritt Island's Walter Day,
Tammy Flowers, Kathy Gay, Debbie Molina and Connie Paxton; Mims' Randy Farner; Palm Bay's Brian Bridgenbecker, Bill
Floyd, Edward Hollar, Lavonda Hollar; Rockledge's Dave Herst and Alan Mercer; Satellite Beach's Scott Metzler; Palm
Bay's Don Sgobbo, Titusville's Greg Aker and Dave Van Duyne and West Melbourne's Paul Fleming and Bernard Nocon.
Good luck to all!!
